This is the first in a series of reflections from a variety of Feed My Starving Children employees about what it is like to work at a faith-filled organization during a time of crisis.

It’s 2:15 a.m. I am usually a sound sleeper. Not now. Like many of you these days, I’m awake at all hours. I wonder what to say, what’s next and how to keep my family, friends and co-workers safe.

My job at FMSC is leading marketing communications. We are supposed to know what to say. We are supposed to have a well-thought-out strategic communications plan ready for times like these. Well, I don’t. (Sorry boss.)

What do we say to you, our friends, volunteers, donors and staff amid all that is COVID-19?

I’ve had lots of years in marketing, but nothing prepares you for this, especially since this is my first time out of the corporate world and working at a Christian nonprofit. Joining the staff a little more than a year ago has brought me closer to the Lord in ways I wouldn’t have imagined a few years ago. I’m beyond grateful.

Over the past week, working here has been total joy. God is here. He is working through each of us. He really DOES have this. 

Amid the intense urgency in trying to find alternative ways to pack meals for God's starving kids, and trying to find new ways to fund meals, there is also a sense of calm and joy knowing God is guiding us though this crisis.

Spirits are being fed all across the organization in unexpected ways. Just a couple of examples:

• Each day at 10:30 a.m., hundreds of employees gather over Zoom to pray. One development advisor shared he knows more about the tops of our heads than he ever knew before because that is what he sees as he scrolls through all the images on the screen of heads bowed in prayer.
• Two of our musically gifted employees from Chicago went “quarantine caroling.” They drove to other employees’ homes and worshipped with them in song. Some even danced on their decks in praise… social distancing in practice!
• Minnesota teammates planned a themed birthday party for their boss. They showed up outside her home and ate cereal (her favorite food) together while keeping their distance and wearing funny hats.
• Our development team calls just to check on people and to pray with them.

Let me tell you, this would not have happened at ANY of the other companies where I have worked.
