Stories of Feeding God's Children Hungry in Body & Spirit

What is World Hunger Day? Why it matters

What is World Hunger Day? Why it matters

May 28th is World Hunger Day, an opportunity for people around the world to do their part in ending world hunger — for good. This year, the theme of World Hunger Day is Sowing Resilience.

Climate change is driving more extreme weather — like droughts, floods and heatwaves — that disrupt farming and reduce crop yields. As a result, food becomes scarcer and prices rise, making nutritious meals harder to afford, especially for the most vulnerable. In 2022 alone, more than 343 million people in 74 countries faced acute food insecurity, a crisis worsened by climate-related disruptions to the global food supply chain.

FMSC is all-in on the fight against hunger and dedicated to seeing every child whole in body and spirit. FMSC works with food distribution partners that stay with communities for the long haul, empowering them to move from relief to development helping these communities as they sow resilience.

One way that FMSC does this is through Project Based Food Assistance (PBFA). Through this initiative, distribution partners, churches and local leaders within a specific region come together to help their community. For a period of time, individuals and communities receive a consistent supply of FMSC food to empower them to rise out of poverty and become self-reliant.

In Nakwanya, Uganda, the PBFA is a collaborative initiative between FMSC, Feed the Hungry and the Irene Gleeson Foundation — and it's making a powerful impact. The community is now moving toward self-reliance by maintaining beehives and growing crops like maize and beans, which thrive in the local climate.

FMSC believes that food assistance and community development work together. There is a whole spectrum between relief and development — and PBFA is a type of partnership that allows us to work in the middle of this spectrum. We partner with communities for a single goal: sustainable, locally-driven and community-led food security.

This World Hunger Day, you can help sow the seeds of resilience for communities facing hunger. Your support makes lasting change possible. Will you give today? Donate now
